Hi Ian,

Do won't mind lugging it, and any lenses, around when not taking model pix.

I've been toying with a DSLR, but after lugging around a Olympus SuperZoom 300 (a SLR-sized point & shoot) and camera bag, I'm reluctant to do it again.

In addition to flash, you should also have an abundance of ambient light. I picked up some GE Reveal 100W bulbs and some clamp lights for flooding the model with light. The Reveal bulbs are coated to reduce the yellow/orange of ordinary incandescent bulbs.

Whatever digicam you decide on, look for a one that has at least Aperature Priority and Shutter Priority modes. Then you can adjust the f-Stop and shutter speeds. If Programmed Auto mode, then f-Stop and shutter speed can be adjusted at the same time.

One such camera, is the FujiFilm FinePix E900 (9 megapixel). This is this camera I currently use. Unfortunately, I haven't set aside too much time to experiment with model pix yet. Too much fun out in the real world with it. And, I haven't built anything recently!

Still, you can get some decent pix with a modest digicam, like my previous FujiFilm FinePix A203 (2 megapixel, no aperature or shutter control) just need lots of light:
