Kurt is quite right.
But the legal and the practical do not always coincide.
1. The owner of the copyright has to find out that you are using them.
2. The copyright owner, probably a publishing company, has to realise that
it does in fact own those images (unlikely given human memory, staff
turnover and the potential size of their back catalogue).
3. They have to give a damn.
4. If they give a damn, can they can be bothered to track you down and
contact you about it?
5. Would they achieve anything by sueing you?
Comes down to an assessment of risk doesn't it?
Are you profiting? No.
Are they damaged artistically or financially? No.
Have you ever copied a cassette or CD? Yes, we all have and every one of us
has got away with it.
Technically they can sue your ass. Would they bother? Absolutely not.
Put a notice at the bottom of your page saying that you will be pleased to
remove any image that inadvertantly infringes someone else's copyright and
then forget about it.
