Here is how I shoot my models. I made a box of white styrene which is curved up as a back drop so no seams show. This box reflects the single 60 watt bulb I use. It is just my work bench lamp, but I turn the florescent light off as it throws the color off. The styrene was free, it is scraps from my local sign shop (sign shops throw out scraps of plastic all the time)! It is basic but does the job. I use a Nikon COOLPIX 4300 Digital Camera on a tri-pod.

I believe your photo is more important than how much you detail your model.
