I always use an olympus.
Important features are manual white blanking and a good makro function. Some olympus digicams have a so called super macro, wich makes closeups at one ore 1,5 inches distance to the object.
Mine has two cardslots, one for compact flash and one for XD cards.
if you want to photoshop your images, the camera should support the TIFF format, because JPEG´s get worse on every manipulation / saving process. TIFF´s don´t.
300$ should be enough for something sufficient.
