Hello All,
First, seeing that Under Two Flags is going to shut down really shocked me. You'd have thought that this great little shop had become one of those British Institutions that are here forever.
I still clearly recall my regular visits when still working in the airline biz and had meetings in London almost monthly.
I always took some etra time to pay Jock Coutts who ran the shop in those days a visit and never left emptyhanded.
My first kit-shops?
Oh dear, those are gone long, very long ago.
The small household goods store where I bought my first Airfix and Frog kits (1/72 tanks and 1/72 planes resepectively) now houses an employment agency.
Lots of Dutch modellers, escpecially from the Amsterdam area will recall the cramped but always cosy shop of mister Hodde, located in some very remote and out of the way area on the outskirts of town.
It always surprised me how many modellers still found their way there.
He was a very unique guy who always managed to get a stock of the newest kits well ahead of the rest of the modelshops in Holland.
On the whole it is sad to see that at least in the Amsterdam area there is not a single decent modelshop left at the moment.
One after the other has vanished or was converted into a plain toyshop with dolls, Lego and lots of PS2 games.
Im am NOT a grumpy old man though; I order all of my kits and accessories through the internet these days.
I never go to a shop in vain, to find out the last so-and-so kit has just been sold out minutes earlier.
But on the other hand... I DO miss the hours of friendly chat with fellow modellers we had.
