The first model shop I remember visiting was the Model Centre in Ryton Street, Worksop in Nottinghamshire, England. I must have been about 5 years old at the time.
The shop was owned by a Mrs Russell, & had a bit of everything from the vast Airfix range (this was 1965), Frog, Revell, Monogram etc. plus model railways & R/C aircraft. Later came Tamiya kits - I remember buying the classic Military Miniatures kits of the 1970s there, like the Matilda, Hanomag halftrack & 88mm gun.
I also used to visit occasionally a shop in Sheffield called Marcway Models & Hobbies, which had other ranges like Almarks & the Rareplanes vac-form aircraft kits. Both these shops were a great day out for a young boy & I could spend all day simply browsing.
I left Worksop at the age of 18 to join the British Army, & modelling got put on the back burner until I was around 34. The last time I went back there was in 2000, when sadly I had to make the arrangements for my late father's funeral. The Model Centre was long gone by then, but I discovered that Mrs Russell was now working in the funeral director's who handled the arrangements. We had a long discussion about the shop, & she told me she had sold the business in the 1990s to a man who had big ideas about R/C cars. Unfortunately he didn't last long there & the shop was a fish & chip shop the last time I passed it.
It's hard not to feel sentimental about these shops, I know modelling is a business like any other but it still makes me feel a tinge of sadness each time one of these shops disappears, no matter where it is.
Cheers,
Chris |
