Mike,
Thanks for the info re. Nostalgic. If I recall correctly it did have some peculiar opening hours & was quite some distance from the Silver Spring Metro station (didn't have a rental car on that trip). It was mostly aimed at aircraft modellers but at that time was also building up its armour side, so still managed to spend plenty in there.
I also recall they had a back room which was packed to the ceiling with OOP & vintage kits, there were some real gems in there. The owner & staff were very accomodating, I was a bit of a curiosity when I visited because I'm a Limey. The owner was fascinated by England & its history, & I recall we had a long conversation about medieval castles. One thing I particularly liked about it was if you wanted to buy for instance an airbrush, they would hook it up to a compressor, give you some paint & an old kit & you could try it out before you bought it. Try doing that in some hobby shops!
In general I love visiting hobby shops in the USA, I've always found something different in every one that I couldn't get elsewhere & some have had a really unique atmosphere. But as you say, what floats one person's boat doesn't do it for everybody else.

Cheers,
Chris
