While packaging a bad kit in a beautiful box is a poor marketing strategy, I will go against the flow here and state that good box art is an additional incentive for me. I have kept the old DML Hummel because of the Volstad painting. Most kits are reviewed well in advance of ordering so I already know the quality of what I will purchase, warts and all. The illustration on the box creates a historical and active context that no other reference will. New boxing by major manufacturers typically have a photo of the completed model somewhere. But a photo or two does not tell the real story. I have critically reviewed many old box tops with photos and errors or bad joints are cleverly concealed by positioning. This is especially true of aircraft where the wing can be used to conceal flaws.

I really enjoy the box illustrations by AFV, DML (not the fuzzy stuff but the Volstad's), Revell, and Tamiya. Miniart and MB are up and coming too.

My thoughts anyway.

cheers

John
