I love good box art. Pity it’s not that common. Anyone for Trumpeter’s 1/48 RA-5C, or Wyvern? Art that you can hang on the wall is great - in fact, I’m thinking of saving box tops so that I can look nostalgically back on old models even if the space demons win and I have to pitch old ones out to make way for the next lot. Art that you can use as a reference is even better. And I have a soft spot for paintings that show just the kit, white background, no clutter. Must be all my exposure to graphic design, or to Tamiya’s house style when I were a lad. (Or it may be my own idleness when I’m on art instead of models - backgrounds are a pain.)
But I agree, photos of the actual kit are essential too. Hasegawa’s practice of cracking art on top, plus well-lit photos of well-made models on the sides, has never been bettered. They don’t do it so much now, and using photos instead of art is disappointing too. But the made-up kits have to be good. Remember those dismal, ill-lit Airfix boxes from the days of Palitoy? And I always think Revell let themselves down on this front. In the old days, a lot of what they made was cack and the photos on the sides made the point loud and clear. Now they make some of the best models anywhere, at amazingly low prices, with lovely box art. But the photos still look like cack - beautiful kits lashed together with the paint slapped on. If it weren’t for the interweb, you’d never know how good they actually were.
Isn’t it interesting, though, that you hardly ever see CGI on boxes, even though the web and published magazines are full of it? Nice to see the paintbrush is still in use …
