Locally we have two shops - one independent, one chain with local management. I would say the local modelers from AMPS and IPMS try to support both shops to the extent they can. The local chain store is managed by a guy who is an active modeler and AMPS member, so he knows his stuff and does a good job keeping up with new releases and the kind of personalized service you mentioned. For example, last summer when the Tamiya Char B-1bis was released, he made sure he had plenty of them and he held them for us. Of course they benefit too, but its a win/win situation - if it weren't it wouldn't last. Before the current guy became manager I never bothered with the chain because there was no good service, no knowledge of the hobby, thus no real reason to support them.
