A Sadder Story From The Other Side Of The Big Pond.

Hi guys,

I really do envy your discussion on how good or bad the LHS's are.
In most people's eyes Amsterdam counts as one of Europe's major capitals, right?
Well... welcome to Pluto & Outer Space Colonies as far as local hobbyshops are concerned.
There used to be quite a few good ones in the larger Amsterdam-area but over the past years one after the other just vanished, threw in the glove and either went into retirement or changed over to selling fluffy dolls instead...

Right now there is just 1 (one !!) left in the greater Amsterdam-area that might be called a local hobby shop. Not a lot of kits anymore but at least he's got a full stock of Tamiya, Vallejo and Modelmaster paints as well as an impressive stock of Evergreen stuff.
I hope he survives for many years to come... to be on the safe side I not only buy all the stuff he has that is useful to me but also keep my fingers crossed every time I leave the shop.

And I DO so miss the ambience of The Good Old Days when you could saunter into Mister Hodde's little shop, got a cup of coffee and he waved you goodbye with a smile even if you hadn't bought anythinig.
Great place to exchange models and techniques with fellow modellers too.

It's a sad thing; was it either local hobby shops haven't been supported enough by hobbyists or the shops themselves that kept on shrinking their available assortment and thus losing their clients?

Good hobbyshops are around in the Netherlands but with a busy time schedule like mine it is not possible to drive 100 kilometers + just to visually check out if I like a new Dragon kit or not.

So, whenever and wherever you can, please give them your support.
Just to avoid that very lonely feeling you are bound to get when -like me- you are forced to ordering thru the internet only.

Ending on a cheerier note... okay, so these good old days are over.

What we got in return are really great, inspiring sites like TL, crewed by a worldwide crowd of really excellent, extremely friendly and helpful fellow modellers.

So it's 'Happy Modelling' after all!
Jerry
