I know exactly what you mean. At the Shizuoka hobby show there were many models in the club displays that had appeared in the glossy Japanese magazines and diorama specials. They certainly were good models but they did appear even better in print.
Controling the lighting has a lot to do with it. Direct overhead lighting emphasizes the shadows (like a figure modeller paint's under a figure's creases) providing a better scale effect.
