I tend to be challenge-driven. Since most of my work is oriented toward dioramas, the settings provide a progession of challenges: urban, rural, desert, winter, etc. So I'm more inspired by "What kind of action and vehicles can I depict in this setting."

Fixing up old dogs like the Tamiya Lee or Marder II or conversion projects offer unique challenges, particularly with regard to research. I like to balance big projects like those with something simpler. So one diorama has a heavily detailed build of Italeri's 155 and an OOTB build of Tamiya's deuce and a half.

Sometimes my projects are chosen for me. If I am reviewing a kit, especially if it's a resin kit or conversion, I prefer to build it so I can more accurately report on its overall quality. So I have a number of kits that are essentially done except for the painting and weathering (and I'm looking forward to the final rules for the Shelf Queens contest to get me off my butt).
