It's got nothing to do with "beating the snipers". The reason to use sniping is to work around people who like to "drive up" a bid by trying to test how high you're willing to go. The bottom line is that if you bid the maximum price you're willing to pay, it will either be enough to win or it won't be. No-one can force you to pay more than you budget for. However you also ideally want to pay as little as possible.

Sniping would be irrelevant if people were allowed to bid once, with their maximum price, which is not revealed until the auction closes. (A "sealed bid auction".) Unfortunately many inexperienced bidders get "auction fever" and just keep bidding, without any clear idea of how much they actually want to pay.

At the end of the day the person who wins the auction is the one who bid the highest amount; the purpose of sniping is to keep your bid away from the frenzy and, hopefully, will allow you to win for less money. If you lose an auction due to a sniper it's for exactly the same reason as losing to anyone else: it means that YOU DIDN'T BID HIGH ENOUGH, not that the sniper did something unethical.

The other advantage to sniping is that you don't actually have to commit yourself until the close of auction. If I see something I want and bid immediately, I'm committed to buying it (if I win), which is unfortunate if (for example) I see exactly the same item somewhere else for half the price. With sniping I can cancel the bid at any time prior to placing it if I need to.
