| Subject: | Re: Does every model need a base? | |

Bases provide 2 main benefits in my opinion. Firstly if the base includes
groundwork then this helps put the model in context. People relate to the
model better this way. Bases need not be overly elaborate or difficult to
construct to serve this purpose.
The second and in my opinion equally as important is that they provide a
means of handling the model that minimises the risk of damage. This is important
if you take your models to shows. I have a number of models that are in need
of repairs that would have been avoided if I had followed my own advice in
the past. A good case in point is my old Italeri Hetzer, which I built with
among other things, thinned plastic side skirt brackets. People insist on
picking this model up by holding the side skirts with predictable results.
The latest round of repairs is now complete and a display base is in progress.
I am using marine styrofoam covered with pre-mixed household filler for most
of my bases now. These bases can in turn be mounted on a nice wooden plaque
or similar for a more classy appearance. |
