OK, I have to step in here for a moment. I have known Glenn for a very long time. When he says he was so excited about all the new kits available, he means he was so excited that he declared he was going on a sabbatical from model building. (Hah! Come on Glenn admit it.) Glenn does this every year. We pay him no mind and don't know what causes it, but we all think it's an artist thing. He's the most talented modeler I've ever known, and he also complains more about modeling than anyone I've ever known. That said he is a perfectionist, a very patient teacher, and a guy who likes a challenge.
I disagree with Glenn about the clone comment. That argument could be said as long as the first model kits became available. We've all always built the same kits. You build what is available but we all approach them differently. The kit is simply a starting point and each modeler makes it into his own.
I am a very lazy modeler and hate filling holes, seams, etc. and was probably the last guy to warm up to link to link tracks, so for me the new kits are great and save time otherwise "wasted" (according to me) and allows more time for adding to, modifying, scratch-building or whatever. My latest creation (when I finally get it done...it almost is) is an SAS Jeep. I took the newest Tamiya U.S. Jeep and then modified it into a WW II SAS jeep. For years, there has been an SAS Jeep on the market, I simply started with a better Jeep and made it look better than the old SAS Jeep kit. I don't think it looks like everyone else's Jeep.
With all the newer kits and subjects available it simply gives us more and better quality choices to start from. I for one am pleased to see all the new kits and I think overall it inspires more people to build more kits. If you like French tanks and nothing else excites you much, chances are you haven't built too many kits. Fortunately, I like just about everything and have purchsed many more kits in recent years than I would have otherwise if all these new subjects had not become available.
Everyone has their own reasons for building models. Some like the challenge of scratch building, others like building out of the box. Some build to show their craft, others build because they like creating collections or want to build a specific favorite subject, while yet others simply enjoy building anything...its a hobby. I just see more choices for more people. Oh and better kits for lazy modelers like me.
