There is an equal problem of the inability of some to accept criticism/critique/advice/help/correction/ reagrdless of its form. This can be just as frustrating and or entertaining as a flame war. I've experienced it in all its forms and over the internet or standing in front of someone its sort of like finding old fireworks....will they go off as planned or will they blow up in your hand, or not at all?

We as a society are losing the very basic ability to communicate and one of the best examples is the ability to offer or accept criticism. Teachers can't use red ink correcting papers because some find it too harsh (no...I'm not kidding), kids aren't allowed to pick their own teams at school because someone will always be picked last and no one wants to be that "loser". Competitions are geared so "everyone has fun and everyone gets an award so no one is left out", we are losing our ability to accept failure, or are gaining a fear of failure (not sure which way you could go with that one...)

One of the things I love doing in pouring over old documentation in research is to see letters written back and forth between opposing sides and to read the witty reparte and polite jibes that leave both sides smililng yet bent over the table in the same sentence. When was the last time you ended a flame or argument with "I am through with you and bid you good day sir..."? There was a time when you could engage in polite acrimony and not feel like a fist fight afterwards.

If we need to relearn anything these days its to offer critical and objective criticism as well as accept same. I've always told students or those that have come to me upset with criticism to listen to all of it, take what you feel you can use, disregard that which you feel is useless and ignore anything outside of pertinent information relavent to the point at hand. i.e. Forget about the preface "You stupid git..."(or unintellignet mouth breather)and concentrate on "you put the tracks on backwards". The personalizing of the criticism proves your critics inability to communicate effectively and gives you no real reason to validate his information because of the manner in which it is presented. Ask yourself the question, is it offered to help you or to help him?
