First, I want to echo Andy's comments and try to restore the meaning of criticism as definitions #2 and #3 point out. Criticism can be praise, pure and simple. People are more inclined to see movies that CRITICS praise than the ones they pan. And we're probably glad to have that information so we didn't waste our time on money on something we would not have like. That goes for model kits.

As a reviewer (aka "critic") of model products, I merely do formally what people do all the time in the discussion forums: say what is good or bad about a product. To a great extent, the collective "voice of the people"--led often by the rivent counters--has pushed manufacturers to improve their products (i.e., "responding to the marketplace"). That's the business end of the hobby.

The personal end of this "golden age of modeling" is what happens on our workbenches and when we come together online or in person.

Each of us has our own reasons why we pursue this hobby. And as soon as anyone says "it's just a hobby" or "it's not about this or that," you can be sure that it IS about this or that to someone else. What it means to you today may be different from what it meant to you two or three years ago, and it could mean something else altogether two or three years from now.

I appreciate the guys who build out of the box as much as I appreciate the rivet counters. I've been both. I will continue to be both, depending on the kit at hand and what my personal goals are. If I want to put all the nuts on, I will. If I don't feel like it, I won't. I don't wonder about how other people live their lives, rivet counters or not. I hope people aren't wasting their time wondering how I live my life.

We know there are people who make themselves feel better by making other people feel bad. We can help fulfill their goal by getting sucked into their game, or we can ignore them. If they can't get validation by beating on other people, they will move on.

Things have mellowed on the web considerably over the past few years. With some exceptions, people have learned how to behave. There are fewer trolls and flame wars are rare. The majority of us share our passion for modeling generously, respectfully, and with an open mind. It's a journey, and I can learn as much from someone who can correct a bad angle as I can from someone who excels at painting and weathering.

And I admire ANYONE who can FINISH a damn model!

Tim
