Subject:  The Sherman Experience TapesList thread.

 Date:  Nov 1, 2001
 From:  Ken Hall
Dear All,
I know this may sound like an advertisement, and I hope you'll forgive me,
but I think its fairly relevant, particularly given that remembrance day is
fast approaching.

I have put together an audiobook called The Sherman Experience Tapes, which
is a compilation of accounts of W.W.II British Sherman tank veterans,
gathered through interviews conducted by myself over the past year. The
interviews cover all aspects of the veterans' experiences, from their
volunteering into the services, through training and combat, and on to how
they feel they are remembered today and their message to the future
generations about their experiences.

I have a website for my company that I have set up which can be viewed
www.hallgraphics.co.uk . You should visit the section entitled 'The Sherman
Experience Tapes' to view the information on the tapes themselves, which
includes samples from the tapes. Please also note that you will require
Microsoft media player version 7.0 or above to listen to the samples. Media
player version 7.0 is available at www.microsoft.com .

Included in the Tapes are three versions of the knocking out of Michael
Wittmann, the most prolific German tank ace who had hundreds of allied
vehicles to his credit, by a Sherman Firefly of 'A' Squadron, 1st
Northamptonshire Yeomanry. There is a version told by the Squadron
second-in-command who organised the action and one told by the Firefly
gunner who fired the actual shot that knocked Wittmann out.

As a final note on the subject, I can do no better than to quote the précis
that appears on the rear cover of the audio book packaging:

"In 1939, humanity was plunged into its second World War. Brave young men,
many still teenagers, unselfishly answered the call to arms and defended the
Allied nations.

Far from their homes and families, suffering from the harsh conditions and
lack of sleep, and in continuous contact with the enemy, the men of the
Armoured Corps fought for our freedom out of steel monsters which, in the
blink of an eye, could change from lumbering protection into personal
coffins or crematoriums.

These are the stories of some of the surviving Sherman tank veterans of the
British Armoured Corps. They serve to illustrate not only their experiences
in battle, but also the lessons they learned about their humanity along the
way."

The Sherman Experience Tapes consist of two audio cassette tapes with a
running time of 145 minutes, packaged in a dual cassette case. The ISBN
number is 0-9541252-0-7 and it will cost £12.99 from within the UK and
Europe or £14.99 from the rest of the World.

Thanks for your time,

Ken Hall
