Subject:  Why TL is the best place for this kind of discussionList thread.

All...
I have been reading all the comments on this "hobby" and I would like to add my two cents. At the risk of being too tangential let me relate two very different experiences that I had here at TL. One has to do with criticism of some fairly contradictory and emotional observations that I made about some box art a while back and the other has to do with a glaring mistake I made on a Stormerr HVM Starstreak. It turns out that both of these experiences were more beneficial to my work in our "hobby" than I could ever have imagined. In response to my editorial comments, people took positions and fired some hard criticism at my observations. My impulse was to feel demeaned and offended. But, when I looked back over the various responses I realized that they were, for the most part, well reasoned and insightful. The members of TL took there criticisms to heart and delivered them with succinct honesty... I had to reconsider some of the points of my own position,, see the weaknesses in my argument and admit some error in my own behavior.
This brings me to the Stormer... I was really proud of that piece (and still am) I got some really nice "great jobs" Then about the 6th or 7th response I saw the dreaded "Great job, But..." oh boy, here was the "bolt counter" I read the message-"this is really nice, do you know you have the tracks on the wrong way round" I laughed out loud. Here I was Mr Proud-gonna-win-a-gold-medal-at AMPS and I had put the tracks on backwards!. I had two weeks to fix things, did so and took home a Silver (A littlel Humble Pie was good for the soul)

Soooo... here is this modeling community that sometimes teaches life lessons. And here is this modeling community that sometimes tells you that you have the tracks on backwards. The level of skill and camaraderie here is what seems to make it work so well. The guys with the big brains and level heads can help to steer the hotheads with the smaller hat sizes. Members who feel that they have wandered into, or caused a flame war can be reassured that they are not alone and that there is no reason to be disenchanted with the TL community...having been a marginal (but reformed) flamer once in my life I have come to respect this community.

The best part is , is that it can all be discussed, and is! The guy who tears into the other guy, rationally or irrationally will incur the keen and for the most part, well-thought out and sharply delivered criticism from members who see things differently. (You really can learn to make better models from the bolt counters too!)
Sometimes small-minded crazy people get over themselves and they certainly are not going to get away with too much for too long here in this community.

Amen

Mike
