Using my definition of "rivet counter" (for lack of a better name), which is just someone who spends a lot of time researching, evaluating then correcting and detailing a kit. This is distinct from the kinds of trolls previously described as pointing out mistakes in other's projects at shows and stuff. I'd prefer to use the term "advanced" modeller but that's too elitist.
There seems to be a lot of people who are pretty vehemently against these kind of "advanced" modellers. I've heard terms like "trophy hunter", "Verlinden modeller", etc. being used to describe this kind of modeller. It seems that a lot of people equate this kind of modelling as "not being fun", these types of modeller "never finish anything", etc. I've seen it even go as far as whole forum threads mocking modellers for spending too much time on research, too much money on after-market and too long building the project.
What's wrong if someone spends months gathering research materials for a project, longer still building it and maybe then not finishing for years?
Another target for these people are reviewers. Writing a kit review is a very time consuming endeavour. Reviewers don't set about thinking "what bad things can I say about this kit?" and proceed to rip the kit apart. Most (if not all) reviewers write a balanced critique and add a lot of useful information. I always try to add extra information to my reviews so at least if the reader is offended by the errors I find in the kit they can at least enjoy the other parts of my review.
So... what's the problem... really? Seems to me that in addition to the group of "rivet counters" that annoy people at shows/web-sites there is also a group of purists who only wish other modellers to build OOTB and make no comments on a kit's accuracy.
This is the impression I get.
My solution is... build your projects the way that makes your happy. Refrain from making thoughtless comments about other people's building patterns.
This is essentially why I set this site up twelve years ago.. to get away from these two groups of extremists that I regularly encountered at my local model club.
