I wonder if it's not so much "uses after-market accessories" but "if it's built OOTB it can't be any good".

There are two extremes -- the above is one end, the other is the person who says that it's "wrong" (or "cheating" or whatever ...) to NOT build it OOTB.

Personally I just want to build models that I'm pleased with. Part of that pleasure is knowing that I've made it as accurate as I can (within my own skill limitations). In pursuit of that I'll use whatever after-market stuff I can lay my hands on, if I think I can get value out of it. On the other hand I'm not likely to start resin-casting my own replacement parts or doing extensive scratch-building; there's a point where "striving for accuracy" takes the pleasure away from the project. But that's just me.
