Recreation, or "playing with toys" is the definition of a hobby. Which is what model tank building is: a hobby.

I don't believe that modern kits are marketed towards kids any more either, they are marketed towards true hobbyists, like use. So the hobby has definitely "grown up". The notion of model kits being for kids is a very old idea, from the '60s and '70s.

If that logic doesn't work then just tell her that you are no longer attracted to her because she's getting fat, so you took up a hobby instead ;-)
