You know what I find as REAL EASY! I use the Tamiya weathering kits (looks like a kids water-color paint set)apllied with the applicator it comes with or a ladies small make-up sponge applicator.
Just brush it on as desired (using the preferred colors of coarse - They have 4 different color sets) This is also an easy way to show weathered white-wash winter schemes.
Try it. I think you will like it.
