I proof-read a lot at work and the standard varies wildly. I’ll always remember the letter that contained thirteen spelling and syntax errors in five lines, including the writer mis-spelling his own name. I think it’s an e-mail habit. You get used to bashing something out quickly, then you get used to bashing something out immediately, and the first thing that you put down is what you send. You should see my last boss’s communications…

Me, I write everything in Word and edit it before copying the text into a reply, wherever it’s going. This is partly to take advantage of the auto-correct function, but mainly because I NEVER let the first draft out of the door - the second word is frequently “off” - and to allow me to make sure the spelling’s orl rite.
