Thanks, Paul, for emphasizing the need for clearly written communication. I couldn't agree with you more. I have seen the trend toward lazy and sloppy postings on nearly every discussion forum I frequent. I understand that not everyone uses proper grammar all of the time, including me. I can forgive the occasional typo or mental slip too, or the writer who occasionally misuses a comma, but I have to draw the line at the complete absence of any capitulation or punctuation at all, or the use of too many internet abbreviations.
I wonder if the trend we are discussing here is a reflection of the type of shorthand and sloppy writing common with text messaging and instant messaging. Perhaps some folks assume it’s acceptable anytime they are communicating via an electronic medium. That doesn’t excuse it of course, but it might explain it.
