| Subject: | C'mon guys - it aiin't that hard... | |

I didn't interpret Paul's request as a demand to break out Strunk & White's style book, or hire an proofreader before posting. It's refreshing to see someone on the Net with a respect for the written language.
Guys, despite being in the Interent age, we still rely on language - be it English, French, Pig latin or Swahili - to convey ideas in the desired context. Alot of miscommunication occurs on discussion groups simply due to incomplete thoughts expressed in incomplete sentences.
Brian had indicated - quite eloquently - that he preferes numbers, facts and figures. I disagree with his assertion that as long as those are correct, everything else has lesser importance. One simply doesn't work without the other. Numbers are the language of engineering, and as such, the failure to use them effectively can be disastrous. Well the same thing applies to words - they are the building blocks of communications - and grammar is the blueprint. Somehow I don't think the Declaration of Independence or the Magna Carta, or Shakespeare's Henry IV would have much meaning if it were communication simply as numbers without grammar.
I don't think anyone is asking you guys to write like Hemingway or Tom Wolfe. But maybe it'd make life easier if you wrote like Tom Clancy or Mickey Spillane.
English is a great, great language that has no real limits. But it does have rules that make it easier to understand, and write. It wouldn't hurt if we paid a little more attention to them.
The Internet is still a medium of words |
