Hi Paul,
On your points, I have the following comments:
On # 1), No need to have the kits to read the reviews. I base my choice on the review (depending on who writes it). Fe I'm choosing AFV Club's Sdkfz 251's over Dragon's. based on a comparison review.
On # 2), Good reviews use good plans for measurement and mention what they use. See fe Terry's reviews on PMMS.
On # 3), Nowadays different manufacturers release their versions of afv's to replace old kits. So two different new ones replace one old one.
A good comparison review is also very easy to read, and show different kit's parts for the same vhicle part side by side. Much easier then flipping between different pages.
