I'd start with toy soldiers, generally our first exposure to figures, which some of us tried to paint for fun or for class projects (the ubiquitous 1/72 scale Alamo project or Custer's Last Stand). I still have many of my old Marx figures from the 60s. The old sets were ready-made battleground dioramas.

You'd have to include the Monogram 1/32 scale series with the Shep Paine inserts and his subsequent Kalmbach books on building AFVs and dioramas.

Airfix's 30-year-old 1/32 multipose kits, which have only recently been adapted in a purposeful way in 1/35 by Dragon.

The maturing of the babyboomers--and their disposable incomes--in the 1990s, which fueled the growth of the current Golden Age.

Verlinden's publications helped promote both his products and the art of diorama building. This was further expanded (literally and figuratively) by Bod Letterman.

Dry transfers. Pre-size and Verlinden preceded Archer, but I'm not sure who the true orginator was.

The Internet. Rec.models.scale begat Track-Link, which begat Missing Lynx, ad infinitum.

Tim
