| Subject: | The resurgence of slide mold technology | |

Hi,
I agree that the price drop in mold technology caused the resurgence of multi-part molds, sliding pin molds, and sliding mold technology. Dragon obviously made it a point to showcase their use but multi-part molds have been used in car kits since the 1960s!
Sliding pin molds were used for many years before I started modeling (1969) and is now mostly used to create gun barrel bores, mounting holes, etcetera.
The sliding mold (a telltale sign is that the part is on the edge of the sprue) is a great way to lessen the amount of parts needed for assembly. I have seen this several decades ago but the precision needed to eliminate mold seams was lacking.
Actually, the toy industry has been using this technology long enough that any of us can now recognize it if we find our old toys.
I do give Dragon the credit for using the polystyrene vinyl mix for other things besides tracks in armor models. Looking closely, one can see that the hob nail boots on many figures (both DS100 and Gen2 Polystyrene) are done with multi part molds which swing in to create the details. Look for large open areas around the parts which allow the mold to arch into position.
Regards,
Saśl |
