Hi guys,

I think the local hobby shop / toy shop stocking plastic kits was the milestone to start with. I remember as a young boy spending 'hours' browsing the shelves, admiring the box art, and finally buying something that suited the pocket money. Starting the 'addiction' I still 'suffer' today.

Nowadays the small LHS / TS is slowly fading away, and the big chains (toys 'r us, etc.) doesn't have any modelling stuff what so ever.

So kudos to the guys that then took the business risk to incorporate these 'new and untried toys' into their assortments. For without them we probably still were limited to wooden ships and planes, model railway, Mecano and Lego?

Some months ago I was visiting a museum fortress in Hoek van Holland and some scale models were part of the collection. A thirteen year old boy identified some of these scale tanks better as the touring guide did and I supported his observations in face of the 'authority and better knowledge' of this touring guide. When the boy started ask me some questions on armour during the break, I was surprised to learn he never had heard of Tamiya and the like. All his armour knowledge came from computer games! That notwithstanding, he directly saw that a picture of aT34 beute panzer in a photo collage of the invasion of the Netherlands was out of place.

So, in thirty odd years, will this milestone thread be on PC games, 3D modelling and virtual reality?

And will the names of Airfix, Frog, Revell, Nichimo, Aurora, Monogrma and the likes, be as faded away as the shops we visited as young lads?

Cheers,
Alex
