1. There has also been an explosion of reference materials which has enabled manufactureres to make models much are vastly more detailed and accurate as well as our ability to criticize when they are not.

On the down side, we spend much more time researching and arguing than building.

2. Shear quantity. Once upon a time I had virtually all the models (Monogram, Tamiya, Italiari and Nichimo) in 1/32-1/35 scale and built them all. Now I have a stash which will never be built, build at a much slower rate, and continue to buy.
