Paul,
It has been my experience that most magazines pay similar per-page rates, although some magazines base their fees on a simple per-submission scale. It all pretty much balances out. Obviously, an article from a well-known author in which very little editorial help is needed whether it be photos or text, will typically garner a bit higher rate.
Premium photographs are important, so take the best you can using a quality camera and consistent set-up. Doing this will make the process and good experience for everyone involved.
The thing to remember is, once they purchase the article it is theirs. Expect them to alter, re-vamp, and embellish it as they wish. Most editors are very savvy about what they want in their magazines and will usually leave your original intact with a few editorial liberties.
Also, don't expect immediate payment. It is a business to them and payment typically goes through several channels which could mean contracts, invoices, etc. Some magazines agree to pay upon acceptance while others pay upon publication. So a 60-90 day wait for payment is not unusual. Just be patient.
Hopefully others will chime in with their experiences.
