As far as plastic kits go, large-size plastic boats add up quickly! Here's two projects that can easily get into the several hundred dollar mark:

Revell 72nd Type VIIc U-boat ~$90
Nautilus Models laser cut wood deck ~$50
Yankee Modelworks resin upper hull set ~$50
Eduard PE set ~$25
White Ensign resin torpedoes ~$10
still "need":
Schatton barrels and periscopes ~$??
and/or CMK's exterior/conning tower set ~$50
possibly replacement brass props ~$??
ULAD decals ~$15

And I wouldn't even think about adding any of CMK's several INTERIOR compartment sets (I think there's 4-5 or those available) at about $60 each!

Another one:
Italeri's 1/35th Elco PT Boat ~$150
"gotta get" Lion Roar detail set ~$150
"gotta get" Archer transfers ~$10

Now if you REALLY want to spend money (and the rest of your life!) take a look at some WOODEN sailing ship models--some of those monsters run $1000+ for just the kit, which really aren't much more than a collection of sticks and thread and some white metal details thrown in!
