| Subject: | My feelings on pre-damaged parts (again) | |
| Date: | Apr 3, 2002 |
| From: | Gary Darlington | |
The following concerns my feeling on this subject. Some of this is copied
from something I wrote that appeared in an earlier, unrelated thread. Parts
may therefore be familiar. I would like to see other opinions on this.
As it is much easier to dent model fenders than to un-dent them, they
should be supplied in brand-new condition and it should be left to the
modeler to decide what level of damage he would like to depict. My belief
is that denting fenders falls into the realm of weathering. If a
manufacturer is going to presume to pre-weather some parts of a kit, why
not just take it to its logical conclusion? The rubber on the wheels could
be worn and nicked, the armour could show gouges, a bent antenna could be
supplied, only half the side skirts would be given (the others having
fallen off, off course), etc. It makes no sense that the fenders are
depicted with damage while all the other components are molded in
factory-new condition. Please, NO MORE DENTED FENDERS. Leave weathering
at the discretion of the builder.
Also, on the DML SU-100 and the Fine Molds Type 95 the fenders are molded
with dents in the center, but the edges are undamaged. This is
unrealistic, as the edges would be the first part of the fender to show
dents. So the denting isn't even well done. I'm actually thankful for
this, as edges would be even more difficult to repair. |
