Roy,

Fair is fair. AFV Club's M36 Jackson, which is fairly new, is a real dog. And they too had ready access to accurate drawings. Their great new M5 Stuart kit still has no backs to the roadwheels. So not all is well their either.

So too for Dragon's original Panzer IVE, etc.

No doubt Academy has missed quite a bit lately as well. Not fixing the suspension error on the M3 Grant, when they already did so on the M7 Priest is simply inexcusable. Beyond lazy and they deserve to be beat up over it. They also missed on their M551 Sheridan since the hull is not correct (prototype I think). Their Sherman line is a mixed bag that actually can build up well as long as you're making several Shermans so you can mix and match.

But I've never agreed with the complaints about their M10 series especially since they do give you a rather complete interior. Same goes for their M18. By most accounts, it's a toss up between Academy and AFV Club on those kits. Same goes for their Tiger with the interior even though its getting a bit out of date by today's standards.

So I see their product line as a mixed bag but not much worse than what's being offered by other manufacturer's.

And if we're being really fair, you've got to beat up Tamiya for selling their ancient kits, often reboxed and combo packed with figures for full price. An unsuspecting modeler could easily buy one, having heard of Tamiya's reputation, and wonder what's going on. My first armor kit was Tamiya's ancient T-34/76 kit that I bought for full price at a hobby shop in 2002 without knowing the kit dated to the 1970s.

As I see it, all of the manufacturer's have a few gems and a few dogs in their product line right now. So it's really up to the modeler to do some research ahead of time.

Jim
