For me, the industry leaders today are:
Tamiya
Dragon's 'Smart Kit' series
AFV Club
All three are now noted for being fundamentally accurate in their models. Detail is relative.
Tamiya
They have a long reputation for making dimensionally accurate models going back to the 1980s and even the 1970s if you can accept the compromises made back then for motorization. Their M3 halftrack series is still accurate today, although short on detail due to the 30 years since it's been released.
Dragon
What a major change in direction they've under gone in the last year or two. For a while they produced insanely detailed kits that were super tough to build. Some, like their Panzer IVE were also technically inaccurate. But now they've switched to their 'Smart Kit' concept and almost all have been received with praise. The kits are accurate with an 'appropriate' level of detail.
AFV Club
Most of their kits are very accurate (the M36 being an embarassing exception). While they aren't as easy to build as a Tamiya kit, they are about the same as the Dragon 'Smart Kits'.
So my point is that I think you're premise might not be correct since the leaders seem to be going in the same direction. Namely, accurate kits with good, but not great, levels of detail.
This approach allows the modeler who wishes supreme accuracy to get aftermarket items and 'go to town' on the kit. But it still allows the average modeler to build a good kit OOTB.
