I have a couple of Academy kits too, mainly because these were available and affordable here in Hungary. I have quite a few WWII aircrafts, plus the Lee, Stuart, M18, M12 - I prefer allied armor to German. I agree, that the molding quality of their kits are quite good, their kits are easy to assemble. I also agree, that without the internet with all of its forums, reference pictures most people would never ever even thought about dimensional discrepancies. But - and this is a huge but: there are all these sources and a serious company has to take them into consideration when making decisions or launching products.
Some six years ago I have bought an Olympus camera with 2,5 Mpixel resolution. At that time it was marketed as an upper-middle, nearly pro level product, offering several services only professionals required. Does it become worse during the years? Definitely not. Could it be marketed as a near pro level camera now? Surely not, because time had passed and the requirements for that category are much higher now than those were then.
If they ignore the changing world around them it won't make their kits or their attitude worse by themselves. It makes them worse comparing to other manufacturers' kits and attitude. |
