Marc, we probably don't disagree much on this, but I do have a different emphasis. My problems with Academy are: 1. they steal from other companies by basing many of their kits on previous kits by everybody from FROG to Tamiya, 2. they screw up things that they should know better about specifically because moderlers with nit-pick-itis have been complaining about the details and supplying the correct information for years, and 3. they don't respect the intelligence of their customers, as reflected in the comments about Academy having the correct bogie molds available but not including the parts in the proper kits.

I am not a get every detail right modeler, either by inclination or skills, but every vehicle or a/c has certain characteristics that have to be right. Hasegawa's Bf 109 F-K series is short from the cockpit to the spinner, and the shortness shows. Hobbycraft's 109 G-Ks have the correct length, but they have a curved top line to the engine cowl. Both severely compromise the essence of the 109s they are supposed to depict, and both errors were passed from kit to kit and both are obvious errors that 109 afficianados have known about for decades. There is simply no excuse for some errors except manufacturing compromises, and Academy makes far too many "compromises" for those modelers who are picky about basic outline accuracy - and they have been accused of literally stealing Hobbycraft's 109 molds.

That said, I am happy as can be with modelers who build for pure enjoyment, or those who just fill seams and achieve the best finish they can without bothering about outline and diminsions. I find myself more and more in that latter category because I haven't maintained my skills well over the years and make more of a mess than an improvement when I try to correct things now. If I ever get around to doing my Tamiya Lee and Grant, I will build the hull basically as is and add aftermarket turrets, wheels and tracks I have been hoarding for years. But i won't buy an Academy kit that offers nothing better than what I already have and includes new issues of its own.
Best,
CTew
