That is one issue that I address in TL6, the active topics are displyed in the appropriate sections.
For now you can always select "Forums - New Message" and select a great time period to look back at at with the "Show messages from" menu, you can select "One week". Also each forum section is sortable by "Date", for example: http://www.track-link.net/forum/news_general/date/1 going back to the start.
