One advice
bid the nearer the auction's end you can (10 seconds is easy to do) - no need to rise the final price in a fruitless fight - decide before hand what you are willing to pay and let your luck be with you
I usually bid on 'weird/funny' pictures or on rarelly seen subjects in books (such as Allied artillery)
