A few months after we invaded Iraq, my ad agency worked on a project that required military hardware - M-16s and some reserve guys in a sort of recon team type of photo. The VP of my agency happened to be in the guard, and after going through the proper channels we had pretty much unfettered access to the guards' local armory - a bunch of soldiers had their eye on us until they saw we were harmless. At the end of the day, my wife brought my 2 boys and we basically had our way with one of the M! Abrams that were on-site - needless to say, AWESOME. We climbed aboard, got in, and checked everything out - banged our heads, smashed our chins - just like real tankers (not) The first sarge was there, and he was a true tanker, and regaled us with all kinds of war stories, and dispelled some info kicking around the 'net at the time - the Abrams that was knocked out by an RPG and so forth. This was all with explicit approval up the chain of command. It was the first time I'd ever seen an M2 .50 cal in real life and I was blown away at how massive it was. My VP, a captain, was apologizing for the lack of material there - it was mostly in the process of being shipped over there. It was still awesome. We also checked out the HMMVWs, but after climbing around the Abrams, this was pretty much anti-climactic.
My feeling is this - if you ask permission and explain what you're up to, you will possibly/probably be met with open arms. Not to be glib, but there is a war going on, and anything the military can do for positive PR will only help - within reason of course. Stop in and ask, or ask some buddies if they know anybody in the guard. My experience is that they are all very happy to talk about this stuff and show you around - it's not exactly the type of stuff they talk about around the dinner table with their loved ones - rivet counting that is.
Of course, I could be totally wrong. Active duty guys? |
