Policy varies widely, but the USMC is generally more cooperative at the unit level. Units are also given more discretion.
I've been doing photography and publishing for nearly twenty years, and have many horror stories. I live a two hour drive from Ft Hood, but years ago had to fly to Benning to photo the new Bradley, but not the fire control system. Then a friend told me that while I was in Georgia his unit was stopped on the roadside at Hood, and some Japanese tourists appeared. Despite no English, they were allowed to photo the entire vehicle - fire controls, everything.
I've had more interviews with Army MPs and officers who didn't get the word than I care to recall. The USMC generally gives you an authorized contact who handles it all.
Most absurd example? Years ago after the Kuwait War when the F-117 was brand new, they had one at the Wings Over Houston air show. Roped off with MPs ostentatiously walking guard, and big signs that you would be shot if you took crossed the rope or took unauthorized photos. Right. They're going to open fire with an M16 on a crowd of civilians intermixed with aircraft loaded with fuel. Interestingly, you could go to the local hobby store two miles outside the gate and buy the latest issue of a Japanese hobby mag that had complete photo coverage: cockpit, weapons bays, EVERYTHING.
Even if you use common sense, not everybody does. Maybe if you're of Japanese ancestry, though ..... |
