| Subject: | What year car do you drive? | |

Sorry Brian but your logic has me a little baffled. Based on your logic, unless we are all NASCAR or Formula 1 drivers we should be driving the same vehicle we bought when we were teenagers. And if that car doesn't run, then we should buy something just as old that does run.
I don't consider myself a rivet counter, but I usually add significant detail to my kits. I don't own a caliper, but I can use my ruler to smack down flies. I don't concern myself too much with the 1-2-3mm dimensional anomalies that appear to cause meat sweats with some modelers on these and other forums. I think I could be considered a "Duck" guy. I buy new kits because they are better than old kits - for the most part. I'm pretty sure it's the same reason you do. A better foundation usually assures a better finished product.
I daresay my approach to the hobby is different from yours. I model for relaxation and to gradually improve my skills... and to impress chicks. When I'm knee deep in microscopic pe parts, the super thin super glue has glued my jean zipper together and the football game is on... I lower my expectations on how exacting i want to be. You are a professional..aka you have made money from the modeling talents you have nutured. You may model for the same reasons i do, but your rewards are obviously divergent from mine. All that is cool by me.
But those of us who aren't going to measure every angle or plate, are pretty satisfied by just making something cool. The building experience itself is reward enough (especially when you hit the thumbnail more often than the steel nail in bigger projects).
Do we often bristle when we read endless postings about an angle being 3 degrees off, the hull being a millimeter too short or some bolts missing on the hull pan? Yep. Why? One reason is that in the mad rush to criticize every kit release, we tend to wonder what's the point. My personal opinion is that someone keeps a scorecard and whoever points out the most faults the fastest is enrolled in the bacon of the month club. Another issue many of us have is the inane comments that are made about photos of kits yet to be released. Plus there is the unspoken inference that if river counters weren't here to point the shortcomings out, we ordinary joes might not figure them out.
Another issue is that the nit pickers/rivet counters like to play favorites. there are some manufacturers who never get a rough comment, while every aspect of another maker's kits are bombarded. That's not only disingenuous, it's simply wrong.
In the final analysis we all build for our own reasons. As exasperated as you get when we say it's close enough for us, we get the same way when we see Photoshop overlays of old photos with lines pointing this that and the other thing out. We know Photoshop can be made to do anything the operator desires. But we also know that we only have limited time to model, so why spend time futzing around in photoshop when there are many very cool - and damned accurate - kits to be built.
Also modeling is about way more than measurements. It's interpreting, painting, coloring, weathering, presentations, good building... blah blah blah. In short there are many more things that make scale models accurate than measurements. Many duck guys choose to focus on those aspects rather than rivet counting.
Those are just a few of the reasons this Duck guy buys and builds new kits, even though older "look" the part. |
