Brian,
Your opening statement provides a good answer from my point of view-
"If it LOOKS like a duck".If you have to take out a set of micro calipers and a magnifying glass to detect flaws or mismeasurements then to my mind they are relatively harmless.
Cumulatively flaws and errors do add up and can take away from a kit, especialy if they are expensive$$$."Flaws equal negative emotional responses in direct proportion to money spent."-You heard it here first.
Let me use the Academy Lee as an example.Using my very own Mark 1
Eyes I was able to see the turret buldge was a real issue-the stowage boxes on the rear hull were well undersized-and one or two other actual noticeable items here and there.
I could NOT tell JUST by looking that the suspension units were off by an astounding unbelieveable who'd a thunk it possible unforgiveable outrageous 2mm.This m takes up more space.
To be fair most reviewers noted theses fact and moved on.I know I want to find out what a kit's strengths and weaknesses are so Thanks and Hats Off to all the rivet counting caliper using reviewers.
What I don't understand was the hysteria that followed in many forums.I remember a statement proclaiming that the 2mm "threw the whole profile off and made the kit look ridiculous."
I truely believe 90 percent of the jabber jawing that ensued was made by people who would not have noticed the issues with their own eyes.
Now let me be very clear-IF the errors in a kit are note worthy to you, then by all means solve them as you see fit.
My rule of thumb is-"Every one has a different sized thumb."
This topic and several other like minded forum issues have gotten me thinking of late.
My thoughts have run along these lines.Certain companies almost never get reviewed. Many of the children of lesser gods-Alan-Alanger-RPM-Techmod-Mirage to name a few- seem to get scant coverage. We all know these kits have dimmensional errors, are light in the detail department, and suffer from all manner of ommisions.Yet there seem to be few reviews of these kits-fewer still coal raking sessions-and almost no hysteria about thier "tragic" flaws. The howling about these same issues if commited by other companies would be deafening.
Personaly I love these misbegotten children, and I do wish there was more coverage-reviwes -build blogs-tweak lists- to satisfy my guilty pleasures.
That's my story and I'm sticky
Dave Manning-off by 2mm or more on a daily basis. |
