I think what Brian is trying to say is . . . If the 2008-era, $60 kit has some problems but "is close enough" for the writer, what is there to recommend it when you can get a 1988-era kit - arguably also, "close enough" - for $20?
The problem with the car analogy is that they have to operate and age contributes to risk and recurring maintenence costs that are (hopefully) minimized on a new car. Models on the other hand have only an initial cost. Models don't get worse simply due to age, cars do.
