I gotta chuckle outta this topic - it's so appropriate with some of the goings-on here lately.
1st armor model - tamiya M3 Lee -Maybe 1982 or so. I remember being so blown away by the infantry figs - you could swap out the Thompson and give the guy a grease gun - awesome!
I also fondly recall perusing Military modeller, and trying to make a list of kits to buy through mail order - SASE anybody?
Unfortunately, model shops here in NEPA were SPARSE at best for armor kits. Railroading - no prob. Planes, no prob. Ships - no prob. But try and find a decent armor kit, or even paint...
I also fondly recall finding a Tamiya King Tiger in Sears, of all places. I still have that beast around somewhere, I tried to redo the paint when I saw an ad with the cool ambush scheme in MMIR.
That brings me to the present. In the late 90's, I was laid up for a bit, and for giggles, bought a Fine Scale Modeller and was BLOWN AWAY by a coolass sherman that had FRIKIN TEXTURE on the turret. That was it, I was back in, hook, line and sinker.
WHy I think this is appropriate is all the nitpicking and bitching that goes on about new kits, accuracy, german subjects, etc. In the 80's, I had basically a select few Tamiya kits to choose from. Today, virtually ANYTHING I may desire is a mouse click away, unless of course, it is a timely delivery of MMIR (hah)
Memories, man, this is a great hobby, and I always get a kick out of hearing - started modelling when I was 12, discovered (fill in the blank with cars, beer, girls or whatever) and now in my 30's with a family, rediscovered it. Yup, that's us. Gen X growing old, disposable income, and rediscovering our youth.
