| The first recorded scale model kit dates back to my childhood dark ages. I can only remember it as being a twin-engined civil aircraft, probably made in (East?) Germany. Later, being a 9 years old on a trip in neighbouring Serbia I went into a library - I think - and simply fallen in love with the strangely accurate pictures on those boxes. Then I had no idea what's inside. Back home I couldn't find anywhere something similar, and I had to wait another year to buy one - an Airfix 1/76 Bofors 40mm AA gun and tractor in Strasbourg. At the beginning I tried just about everything I could get my hands on - ships, helicopters, aircraft - in any scale until setteling to 1/35 armor (my first one was a M925 Italeri truck), again, after several years. Back then ,with no internet, no books or other publications (in Romania the term scale modelling had a very different meaning -what today is known as scrachbuilding- and the subjects were almost exclusively aircraft or ships) and no friends to share the hobby, my skills develloped at snailpace: it took me several models to figure out that they should be painted, several others more that they should be painted using certain colors. The only place I could find models were the gas stations and even if I found any they would be mostly 1/72 aircraft. I used to be so happy whenever I stumbled on a 1/35 Italeri kit... The right paint was nearly impossible to find though. My first tank, a Panther G early Tamyia received no fewer than 3 coats of paint, of which the first was bright yellow with hull red and light green camo... |
