Dear Jan,
The finnish army purhchaced their first helmets from german surplus stocks after the first world war and used the shape as basis for their indigenous production. The shape originates from the middle ages and is quite practical (still in use by the americans today).
The swastika is an age-old symbol of good luck and depicts the sun (or sometimes the moon?). Swedish baron von Rosen donated the first warplane (was it a Morane scout?) to the whites during the finnish civil war in 1918. It came with blue swastikas painted on it`s wings (von Rosen`s personal decoration), which the finnish airforce then adopted as a national emblem. During the winter war the finnish tank force used blue and white bands in the turret as their national marking, but during the continuation war this was changed to "short-legged" black swastikas with white contours. Perhaps they were expecting co-operation with the panzerwaffe who had black-and-white crosses as their markings?? (Just my wild guess).
