This is the age-old question !!
I think that the simple answer is that prices are affected more by where you live and how much the importer can get away with.
A prime example here is Dragon USA Online have a pre-order price on the Cyber Hobby new King Tiger of $41.99, whereas Cyber Hobby Europe have it for 55 Euros, or a whopping great $87 !!
Dragon prices here in the UK have shot up recently - a standard armour kit is now at the £40 mark. Tamiya recently dropped their UK prices and AFV Club & Tristar kits have gone up by a small margin only.
So I reserve judgement on oil and shipping costs yet having an great effect on kit prices. It depends on the taxation policy of the country in which you buy your kit to a lesser extent, but is mainly due to the pricing policy of the national importer.
